What a nath is — origin and meaning

The word nath derives from Sanskrit "nathika" — a piercing ornament. Historically, the nath was worn by Mughal nobility and gradually became central to Indo-Pak bridal traditions. The size and ornateness signalled social standing.

In modern Pakistan, the nath is associated specifically with nikah ceremonies. Some brides also wear it at baraat (the procession) if same-day. It's rarely worn at walima — which is a deliberate styling choice (walima is lighter, more modern).

Pierced vs non-piercing — three modern styles

1. Traditional pierced nath

If you have a real nose piercing, you can wear a traditional pierced nath. The post goes through the nostril, and a chain hooks behind the ear. Most authentic look but commits you to a piercing.

2. Hook + chain (non-piercing) — most popular 2026 bridal style

A small hook clips into the nostril, decorative chain hooks behind the ear. The hook is invisible in photos. Most secure for 6+ hour ceremonies. 95% of modern Pakistani brides choose this style if they don't have a real piercing.

3. Magnet nath

Two magnetic halves, one on each side of the nostril. No chain hooking behind the ear. Newer style, simpler to apply. Less reliable for all-night ceremonies — the magnets can shift during dancing.

4. Pressure-clip nath

A small spring-clip squeezes the nostril. Comfortable for short events (mehndi night) but less for 6+ hour nikah. Good for trial-fitting.

Sizing by face shape

Long or oval face

Choose a larger nath with deep drop. The elongation flatters and balances your face proportions. Multi-drop styles work well.

Round face

Choose a medium nath proportional to your nose size. Too large pulls focus down and exaggerates the round shape.

Square face

Choose an ornate side-bulge style rather than deep drop. Softens the jawline visually.

Heart-shaped face

Choose a medium-width nath with moderate drop. Wider bottom balances your narrower chin.

Matching metal tone to your bridal set

The most common bridal styling mistake is mixing metal tones. Don't do it.

  • Kundan bridal set (warm gold with stones): warm-gold nath with kundan or pearl accents
  • Polki bridal set: warm-gold or champagne nath with polki or uncut-diamond accents
  • Rose-gold bridal set: rose-gold nath, ideally same casting
  • Silver-toned bridal set: silver-tone or white-gold nath
  • Mixed (rare): only if your set deliberately combines tones — uncommon for Pakistani brides

The chain attachment — ear hook positioning

The decorative chain that goes from the nostril to the ear hooks behind the ear cartilage (not through any piercing). The chain should be:

  • Taut but not tight — too loose looks droopy in photos; too tight pulls on the nostril
  • Hooked at the same height as the nostril — so the chain stays horizontal
  • Tucked behind the hairline if possible — looks cleaner

Modern bridal hairstyles often include a side-parted updo specifically to accommodate the nath chain.

Comfort tricks for full-day wear

Apply medical tape inside the clip

A thin layer of medical tape between the clip and your nostril reduces pressure marks. Won't affect appearance.

Adjust chain tension twice during the event

Heat + movement loosens hooks. Re-adjust after photos and after dinner.

Carry a small clip in your wallet

The clip can come loose during high-action moments. Have a backup on hand.

Apply numbing cream 20 minutes before

If you're sensitive — over-the-counter numbing cream applied to the nostril 20 minutes before makes the first hour painless. Wears off naturally.

2026 nath trends in Pakistan

Mini naths replacing large bridal drops

The heavy 4-inch drop nath is giving way to delicate 1.5-inch mini naths. Suit modern bridal photoshoots; comfortable across 6+ hour ceremonies.

No-chain naths for walima

Single-stone clip-on nose studs without ear chain — perfect for walima where the look is lighter.

Coloured stone accents

Emerald or ruby accents on the central drop — modern twist on traditional kundan/polki.

Floral motif naths

Inspired by traditional Mughal floral jewellery — coming back strongly in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

I have sensitive skin — will the nath cause an allergic reaction?

Hanaya naths use hypoallergenic silver-alloy bases. The risk of reaction is low. If you've reacted to fashion jewellery before, apply medical tape between clip and nostril as a barrier.

How much does a bridal nath cost in Pakistan?

Range: Rs. 600 (simple) to Rs. 6,000 (premium kundan/polki). Average bridal spend: Rs. 1,500-3,000.

Will the clip-on nath fall off during my function?

Hook + chain styles are very secure — the chain anchors behind the ear even during dancing. Magnet styles are less reliable for full-day events. Pressure-clip styles are good for short events.

Can I wear a nath for walima too?

You can, but most modern Pakistani brides choose a much smaller / no nath for walima — the look is lighter overall.

What if the nath doesn't fit my nose?

Hanaya offers 7-day exchange on unused items in original packaging. We can swap for a smaller/larger clip. WhatsApp +92 370 390 4527 with the issue before opening any inner tags.

Should I get my nose pierced specifically for the wedding?

Not necessary. The clip + chain non-piercing styles photograph identically. If you want a permanent piercing for daily nose-pin wear later, get pierced 2-3 months before the wedding so it fully heals.
