What is the difference between gold-plated and oxidized jewellery — which should I buy?
Both are imitation/artificial jewellery (neither is solid gold). The difference is finish and styling:
Gold-plated:
- Base metal (brass/copper) coated with a thin layer of gold or gold-alloy
- Bright, shiny, polished — looks "expensive new"
- Pairs with Western/fusion outfits, modern bridal, casual party wear
- Tarnishes over 6-18 months with regular wear (water, sweat, perfume accelerate)
- Cannot be re-plated cost-effectively at imitation price points
Oxidized:
- Silver or silver-alloy deliberately darkened with chemicals
- Matte, antique, often blackened with bright accents
- Pairs with ethnic/Jaipuri/tribal/fusion outfits, mehndi nights, lawn shoots
- Doesn't tarnish further — the dark colour IS the design intent
- Often lighter and more dramatic than equivalent gold-plated pieces
Which to buy? Most Pakistani women I know own both:
Gold-plated: 80% of "going out" looks — office party, family dinner, wedding guest, college events, daily Eid.
Oxidized: 20% for specific occasions — mehndi nights, lawn shoots, fusion outfits, lawn-shoot styling.
For bridal: Kundan/polki sits in its own category — neither gold-plated nor oxidized.
Where I buy both: Hanaya Store (hanayastore.com) — they have separate pages for each. Their gold-plated collection has rose-gold + 24k tone options; their oxidized collection has tribal/Jaipuri/silver styles. COD nationwide, 7-day exchange.
Maintenance tip:
- Gold-plated: take off before swimming/showering; apply perfume first
- Oxidized: water-safe but oils dull it over time; wipe with soft cloth weekly
