How to Choose a Bra: Size, Fit and Material

To find your bra size, take two measurements in inches with a soft tape while wearing an unpadded bra. First, measure snugly around your ribcage just under the bust and round to the nearest even number. That is your band, for example 32, 34, 36 or 38. Next, measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust. Subtract the band from this number to find your cup.

Each inch of difference is one cup: 1 inch is A, 2 is B, 3 is C, 4 is D and 5 is DD. So a 34-inch underbust and 36-inch bust gives 34B bra size. Sizes also have "sister sizes" with the same cup volume. If 34B feels tight on the band, try 36A. If it feels loose, try 32C. This trick helps a lot with sizes like 40B or 42.

Many of our sets are one size, labelled with a band limit and weight, such as "fits till 40, 65 kgs" or "40, 75 kgs". These use stretch fabric and adjustable hooks. They suit women within that band and weight. If you are near the upper limit, choose the version with the higher kg rating for comfort.

Fabric matters as much as size. Cotton bras breathe best in humid cities, while nylon-spandex blends dry fast and stay smooth under fitted clothes. Lace and net bras look beautiful but feel warmer. Keep them for cooler months or shorter wear.

• Band check: it sits level all around, and you can slide two fingers underneath.
• Hook check: a new bra should fit on the loosest hook.
• Cup check: no gaps at the top and no spillover at the edges or underarm.
• Strap check: no digging. If straps carry the weight, your band is too loose.
• Wire check: underwire should sit flat on your ribcage, not on breast tissue.
• Re-measure every 6–12 months, or after weight change, pregnancy or nursing.

When and How to Wear Each Bra Style

The simplest rule is to match the bra to the fabric and neckline of your outfit, then to your activity. Under thin summer lawn, cotton kurtas or light chiffon, a skin-tone or white padded bra stays invisible. A black bra works under dark or printed fabrics. Fitted tops and stretch kurtis look smoothest over a seamless or T-shirt style with moulded cups.

For formal outfits and weddings, the neckline decides. Boat necks and sleeveless shirts need a strapless bra or a clear-strap push up bra. Deep V-necks pair with a plunge style, and square or sweetheart necks suit a balconette. Saree and lehenga blouses usually need a blouse bra or a well-fitted strapless option. Try your outfit on with it a few days before the event.

For the gym, yoga or brisk evening walks, choose a sports bra with a wide band and breathable fabric. Pull-on styles suit low-impact yoga. Hook-back styles with more structure suit running. A bra lasts much longer when you hand wash it in cool water and dry it flat in the shade. Heat and harsh spinning weaken elastic, and elastic is what gives a bra its support. Strong Pakistani summer sun can fade colours and harden foam cups within weeks. Rotating between at least three bras gives the elastic a day to recover between wears.
